Nationally-Recognized Environmental Investigator Launches Independent Investigation of Northeast Pennsylvania’s Marcellus Shale Drilling Effects

Theodore O. Meiggs, Ph.D. of Golden, Colorado, the former Assistant Director of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s National Enforcement Investigations Center and current President and Senior Consultant at Meiggs Environmental Consultants, Inc., spent the greater part of last week touring oil and gas drilling areas in Northeast Pennsylvania as part of his own private investigation into the effects of hydrofracking on the health and safety of local residents. Dr. Meiggs is a noted chemist and environmental expert with over forty years of experience in the environmental field.
In exploring the matter, he is evaluating previously collected data and reports, as well as personally collecting his own evidence. “I flew out here because I’ve been very anxious to see what’s going on for myself. There appears to be a lot of controversy going on. It’s already apparent that we are facing a major environmental situation that has and will affect many people in the area. To protect human health, it is imperative that the potential impacts be properly assessed and methods by which to minimize it are aggressively pursued and implemented. As someone with extensive experience and knowledge in environmental investigations, I hope to contribute to our knowledge of the situation and be able to recommend ways to minimize any adverse impacts.”
Dr. Meiggs says, “It’s time that the people of this region have access to an independent assessment of the Marcellus Shale situation, an assessment untainted by political or economic considerations. I want to help folks get closer to the truth. Knowledge is power. If people truly understand what is going on and how it may impact them and their families, they will know what options they have if or when that occurs. Otherwise, it’s just a guessing game and that never ends well.”
For over thirty years, Dr. Meiggs has advised industrial clients, regulatory program managers, attorneys and investigators on issues relating to environmental compliance, regulations, remediation, hazardous waste, analytical chemistry, environmental testing and QA/QC practices and procedures. He has over twenty-five years of public and private analytical laboratory management experience including time spent as the Director of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s National Enforcement Investigations Center (NEIC) laboratory, the only national laboratory devoted to enforcing Federal environmental regulations. Dr. Meiggs has planned and managed hundreds of environmental investigations for the Enforcement Office of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, including the gathering of evidence for cases of air, water, pesticide, radiation and hazardous waste compliance, many of national significance.
